The Last Frontier: A Disney Wonder Cruise Report - June 2025 (Day 04: Skagway, Alaska)
Our first port day arrived bright and early! We had a 7:15am call time for our ziplining excursion (if you’re looking at options this is the grizzly falls one and we booked it through Disney - the price was nearly the same when looking at independent bookings). The kids were exhausted after all the late nights in the kids clubs, but they rallied and we made it to our meeting spot and off the ship in record time.
It was freezing and especially windy when we got off the ship. Our guide told us it would be significantly warmer when we got where we were going. And he wasn’t wrong. It was noticeably warmer when we got away from the water and under the canopy of trees. Turned out to be the perfect temperature for zip lining.
We were the first group off the ship, everything was peaceful and quiet as we drove through town. And it was only ourselves and a family of three on the bus. We actually stopped a couple times as we were heading down the main drag to pick up some of our guides. I don’t think I was prepared for how green and full of life the landscape would be. It was vibrant and lush. I can’t imagine what it would have looked like with a bright sun shining down on it.
As we were rounding a bend in the road, our driver stopped suddenly, because he saw a bear cub. We didn’t get to see mom, and I didn’t get a photo, but my favorite thing about this was that all the guides immediately popped up from their seats and out of their little bubbles, just as excited as the rest of us. It was very early in the season (the second or third week), and it was a sweet reminder that many of these young 20 somethings were on their own Alaskan adventure for the summer.
When we arrived at the base of the mountain, we walked through gorgeous wildflower dotted fields to get to our excursion point, where we had a restroom break, before boarding the Angry Pumpkin for our climb to the top of the lines.
It’s at the top where they take all the extra stuff you’re carrying and put it in a container for your group. Buy-bye, camera baby. They may have let me get away with a mirrorless, but my canon was a no go.
This excursion was amazing. Our guides just so happened to both be Disney nerds. One was from Central Florida and the other spent some time as a cast member. We got along swimmingly with them and they were amazing with the kids. They immediately offered up some sparkles and Penny was all about that life. Pretty sure that one day she’s going to tell us she’s spending a summer in Alaska.
We were suited up and given a quick safety debrief before heading out onto our first platform. If you’re like me and want to zip line, but heights are not your favorite, then this is the ziplining experience for you. At no point did I feel fearful of the height. I chose this one because it sits under the canopy of trees and traverses back and forth over a waterfall as it makes its way down the mountain. There are other ziplining excursions that are much higher and have expansive views above the canopy. This is not that. This one was more nature driven than thrill seeking. Listening to the rushing waterfall was my favorite part of the experience.
I think there was something like eleven lines, and our guides had us doing silly things on them as we went. Like dancing, singing, trust falls, spins, attempts at inversions… they made the experience even more fun.
After our excursion, we said goodbye to our guides, and rode back down the mountain in the Angry pumpkin, where we met up with our driver and made our way back to town.
He offered to drop us off at the edge of town or take us all the way to the port, and we chose to get off and walk back. Unlike when we drover through earlier that morning, the sleepy little town was crawling with cruise passengers now. We grabbed lunch at Skagway Brewing, our guides suggested it for the beer selection, which was fantastic. The food was your usual bar food.
After lunch we wandered back down the street towards our ship. We had one last stop to make… the Klondike Doughboy. A not-to-be-missed stop, for sure. The line was out the door, but the cinnamon and sugar covered dough was delicious and absolutely worth it.
From there, it was a short walk back to the ship, under the bluest of skies.
Back on board, Lucas found a marvel movie to watch, Pen and I grabbed some ice cream before I took her to the kids club, and then Brett and I enjoyed some time in the hot tub. We had the whole deck to ourselves. It was a magical afternoon. And then he went to Senses for a massage, while I took up residence on deck four again.
Ran into Goofy and my son at the exact same time. It was starting to become a theme.
We had another great dinner and went to see Frozen. Being the theater nerds we are, we never skip the shows. Pretty sure we may have also snuck in some trivia, as well. No notes and no photos means we’ll never know. :)
Skagway turned out to be my favorite port of call. After all the research and instagram searching I had done, I really expected Ketchikan to be the one to capture me, but that wasn’t the case. Part of it could have had to do with our excursion choices (and the fact that it was our first stop and we were on a high going into it), but I fell a little bit in love with the area here.
How could you not? It looks like a little model train town… as if we’re about to enter Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood.
Up next… Juneau. And our most anticipated excursion: Dogsledding on a glacier!
